Despicable Me

Fun With Gru, His Car and His Gun

For this personal project, I challenged myself by combining multiple models for the first time, mixing hard surface modeling with organic modeling, an area where I don’t have much experience. Throughout the process, I particularly enjoyed texturing the car and Gru. It was a lot of fun, and I’m proud of the final result. I feel like the models clearly reference the Despicable Me movie, which was exactly my goal.

One of the easiest parts of the project was modeling Gru’s car, which came together quite quickly. However, the biggest challenge was modeling Gru himself. His asymmetrical posture made it difficult to get the proportions right, and connecting his arms required a lot of trial and error, including creating and deleting faces multiple times.

Another challenge was creating my own material using Adobe Substance Designer. I had to learn how nodes interact, which took time to understand. Still, it was a valuable learning experience, and Substance Designer is a tool I definitely want to explore further. While the result isn’t perfect, I’m still happy with how it turned out, especially since it was my first time using the software.

If I were to do this project again, I would focus on making the models smoother and less low poly.
